五、閱讀理解 (共10小題;每小題2分,滿分20分)

A

When my son was a baby still, my husband, the baby and I went on an outing to a beautiful noble home in a lovely park. On Sundays the owners would open it to the public. That day we also decided to walk through the park as well.

I was carrying the baby in my arms as we strolled(散步). By the time my husband had been ahead of us, I remembered I had to cross a driveway that led to the Hall. There was a slight bend, but there was no traffic at that time of day. I wanted to cross it and I had a strange sensation(感覺). I could not move. It was as if I had come across a huge invisible force. I just could not move an inch. I was in panic as I had no idea what was happening to me.

I pushed forward and there was ‘something’ that prevented me from crossing the driveway. Then suddenly a little red sports car came at a terrible speed from the slight bend on the road. As soon as it went past us, I nearly fell forward. I had been pushing to move forward. When the invisible force let up, it made sense that I would suddenly move forward. My baby and I would surely have been badly injured or worse if I had crossed that driveway.

I have experienced many times like that, so much help from other sources. I truly believe we receive help to be able to live our lives here. All I know is that we are not left to struggle on our own.

41. One Sunday the author’s whole family went to visit____.

A. a friend’s home  B. an attractive grand home  C. a far public park   D. the local museum

42. The author had to cross the driveway at that time because ____.

A. she was carrying the baby in her arms       B. she must catch up with her husband

C. there was a slight bend on the road    D. her husband had left the park

43. When the author couldn’t move, she felt very ____.

A. curious    B. nervous       C. calm         D. terrified

C. someone prevented the author from crossing the driveway

D. an unknown force helped the author escape a disaster

45. The underlined phrase “let up” probably means ____.

A. weakened       B. increased      C. appeared     D. entered

B

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have an equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, while the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons and events and the resulting effects upon their minds.

People who are happy fix their attention on the convenience of things. They enjoy all cheerful things. Those who are unhappy think and speak only of unpleasant things. Through their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, offend many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind is founded in nature, such unhappy people should be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it can be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects.

Although this attitude is mainly an act of the imagination, it has serious results since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. If such people aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone speak a word in favor of their hopes. If they are criticized, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join in criticizing their wrong doings. So they should change this bad habit and stop worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, they will have a disagreeable time, especially when someone becomes mixed up in their quarrels.

46. How does the writer tell the happy from the unhappy?

A. According to their degree of health.       B. According to their wealth.

C. According to their attitudes to the same thing.  D. According to their habits.

47. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” probably means “________”.

A. have a good attitude towards social life B. make others unhappy

C. tend to scold others openly             D. enjoy the pleasure of life

48. We can conclude from the passage that ________.

A. we should pity all unhappy people    B. unhappy people are dangerous to social life

C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness D. unhappy people can not understand happy people

49. If such unhappy people insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should ________.

A. not have any communication with them B persuade them to recognize the bad effects of their habits

C. show no respect for them          D. quarrel with them until they realize their mistakes

50. In this passage, the writer mainly ________.

A. describes two types of people        B. laughs at unhappy people

C. suggests ways to help unhappy people   D. tells people how to be happy in life
